Hofstede/Lewis Model

Hofstede Model vs Lewis Model

In the context of the Hofstede Model, what is used to distinguish between different national cultures, the dimensions of culture, their impact on etiquette and to facilitate communication in areas ranging from business to diplomacy, Greece and Colombia exhibit certain differences and similarities that could affect a Greek individual's experience studying abroad in Barranquilla. One of the notable dimensions is "Power Distance". Greece has a relatively high Power Distance, indicating a hierarchical society, while Colombia also tends to lean towards higher power distances. This similarity might lead to a sense of familiarity for a Greek student in terms of respecting authority and adhering to social hierarchies. However, the stark difference lies in "Individualism versus Collectivism". Greece scores higher on Individualism, valuing personal goals and autonomy, while Colombia tends to be more collectivist, emphasizing group harmony. This contrast could pose challenges for a Greek student, as the emphasis on group identity and loyalty in Colombia might clash with their more individualistic values.

Taking into account the most dominant features of each cultural type, Lewis has also developed a very simple and effective model that shows what kind of interaction members of each type have to keep with each other. Considering that model, Greece and Colombia both fall within the "Linear-Active" category, which suggests a more task-oriented approach to work and communication.  This could facilitate effective academic engagement for a Greek student, as the linear-active nature aligns with their own culture. However, the potential pitfalls lie in the specific ways of communication styles. Greeks typically employ a direct and explicit communication style, while Colombians often rely on indirect communication to maintain social harmony. This difference might lead to misunderstandings or misinterpretations for the Greek student, causing difficulties in navigating social interactions and academic collaborations.
